Make Yourself Presentable.

The Shack?

Long the place to conveniently purchase (though rather expensive-ish) audio and video cables, your local Radioshack will soon be changing names. Rather, it’ll be shortened by two syllables  as “The Shack” in a rebranding strategy that surely aims to hip-up the 87-year-old brand.

According to wikipedia (currently the only original source):

This will be kicked off by a launch celebration in both San Francisco and New York featuring “14 foot tall laptops” streaming the images from their webcams from one city to the other, live music in both locations, as well as television coverage of the event.

Fun, but do they need a hip rebranding? I suppose they don’t sell many radios these days but I wonder who they’re trying to appeal to–since when did anybody need to be excited about going to Radioshack? Maybe they’re planning on enlisting @THE_REAL_SHAQ to help?

Google Profiling – It’s A Good Thing

We heart Google Profiles. Adding one made us both instantly more searchable.

Making a common name, like my name–Jon Norris, stand out in the crowd is a tough proposition, but creating a Google Profile has made it easier to find information about me specifically. For Seattle area searches, my profile now appears on at the bottom of the first result page when my name is entered.

Creating a profile also gives you a place to control what information you’d like associated with your name. Create one here.

Our profiles: Jon and Katie

Note: A word of caution – as with any public profile, be careful with the information you put up, such as your home town or birth date, as it’s possible that your Social Security Number could be reverse engineered using that information.

Channeling Russell Crowe To Negotiate Self-Doubt

Self-doubt is always present and it’s such an awful little demon, especially in tough times like these. I deal with this little devil every time I’ve ever presented, pitched, or spoken in front of people. There’s a big part of me that knows I can do this well and believes in my talent, but there’s also this nasty voice in the back of my head that handily disagrees saying: what if this is the one time you screw this up? Conquering it is like repeatedly climbing the same mountain. Sometimes you just don’t know if you’ve got it in you and you’re afraid the talent was never there in the first place.

The hardest part about self-doubt is its merciless and reoccurring nature. No matter how many times you beat it back it still rears its ugly head. There’s no trick or quick fix advice I can give you. No magic words or meditation ritual. The only way to slay the dragon is to live with it. Get comfortable with it.

Think of the movie “A Beautiful Mind” with Russell Crowe. As Crowe’s character struggles with schizophrenic delusions, he realizes he can’t make them go away. The only way he can move on with his life and achieve his goals is to live with them. He knows they are there, but doesn’t let them dictate his life. It’s the same with self-doubt, all we can do is live with it, know it’s there and not let it get the best of us.

Mastering public speaking is all about managing fear and the doubt it brings. It’s only fear that can stop you from giving presentations and pitches to your best possible potential. If you have the mental discipline to keep working, you can function and thrive regardless of the situation. We choose what rules our lives and have full power over our demons. You certainly don’t have to love or even like them, but if you can learn to live with your demons you’ll realize they will only stop you if you let them.

Nordstrom Rack coming to NY (You’re Welcome)

Seattle has produced some great exports (Microsoft, Starbucks, Amazon, Costco, Boeing) and now New York is getting a Nordstrom Rack.

From The Cut:

Finally, Nordstrom is coming to New York!…Maybe the recession will be the best thing to ever happen to Union Square shops.

We know that NY is a bit starved for style, so we’re glad to lend a helping hand. Its the least we can do in such difficult times.

NY, let us know if there’s anything else we can do for you. How about some Windows 7?
